WELCOME ADDRESS

WELCOME ADDRESS
There's nothing on this earth more to be prized than a life!!

The I Meeting on Suicide Prevention "Say Yes to Life!” starts in Saint-Petersburg November 20, 2019. Recognition of urgent character of life and mental health preservation has become its conceptual basis.

The uniqueness of the event consists in participation of a wide range of specialists: authorities, representatives of law enforcement structures and social organisations, key professionals of different areas of expertise such as physicians, psychologists, health officials, social workers, etc. The topics were chosen due to social significance, wide-spread and difficulty of the issues related to suicidal behaviour. Broader discussion and invitation of head experts will allow finding solutions to the most complicated debating points as well as developing efficient consistent interdepartmental strategies. Exchanging experience and setting new scientific, practical and organisational tasks will further suicide frequency drop in the Russian Federation, develop efficient preventive measures and define prospects in treatment of mental disorders as well as resolve psychological and social issues.

Vladimir Bekhterev, an outstanding Russian and Soviet psychiatrist, neuropathologist, physiologist, psychologist, father of reflexology and pathopsychological course in Russia, member of the Academy of Sciences, immensely contributed to the study of suicidal behaviour. His article “About Causes of Suicide and Possible Fight against them” published in 1912 has the most significant issues in the sphere of suicidology many of which are still unsolved.

The World Health Assembly approved WHO Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan in 2013. An essential part of the Plan is devoted to decrease of the suicide frequency level in the world. The WHO report (2014) regards suicides as a socially significant problem to be considered globally.

Nowadays the priority is to develop national programmes addressing both suicidal behaviour prevention and formation of healthy lifestyle, skills for stress overcoming, favorable inclusive environment creation.

Suicidal behaviour is multilateral biopsychosocial phenomenon. Only further research and developing of national strategies based on interdepartmental cooperation, combined action of experts and pro-active stand of society can undoubtedly change completely the present situation and preserve life of many people as well as emotional security of their family.

We wish all the participants and guests of the Meeting health and fruitful work!
